Dear Ichiro
In their own words.
The objective of Dear Ichiro was to honor Ichiro Suzuki’s once-in-a-generation legacy in a way that felt as personal and far-reaching as his impact on the sport itself. As part of his 2025 induction as the first Japanese-born National Baseball Hall of Famer and the Mariners retirement of his iconic No. 51, we wanted to go one step further than a traditional highlight reel and instead place fans at the center of the story.
Ichiro’s influence transcends statistics. He inspired generations of fans across cultures and continents, reshaped perceptions of what was possible for international players and became a deeply personal figure in the lives of those who watched him play. Our goal was to create a living archive of his legacy, capturing not just what Ichiro did on the field, but what he meant to people off it.
By inviting fans from around the world to share letters, voicemails, photos and videos addressed directly to Ichiro, we aimed to build a story that reflected the reach, authenticity and impact of that legacy, while giving fans a starring role in one of the most meaningful moments in Mariners history. Beginning in June and running through Ichiro’s Hall of Fame induction in late July, we opened multiple submission channels to allow fans to share their stories in the easiest and most impactful way for them: social and digital prompts directing fans to Mariners.com, a dedicated voicemail line or mailed letters to T-Mobile Park.

Hundreds of letters & photographs were used to build a physical wall that anchors our Dear Ichiro video, narrated entirely by authentic, powerful fan voicemails. The video debuted across Mariners social platforms alongside follow-up posts spotlighting individual letters, before serving as the show open for Ichiro’s number retirement ceremony that evening. This approach blended digital and live experiences into one collective tribute that could resonate with fans everywhere, from those watching around the world to those inside the ballpark that night.
The stories we received were heartfelt and personal, from young athletes inspired by his work ethic to lifelong fans sharing how Ichiro shaped their lives. That connection translated to measurable impact: across all platforms, the content earned 2.4 million impressions, 870,000 video views and 62,000 engagements.
Certain stories resonated especially strongly. A post featuring Randy Boyer’s letter, about leaving a seat open for his late wife at the number retirement ceremony, collected 334,000 impressions on X (4.5x our 2025 average) and hundreds of heartfelt replies.
Beyond the numbers, the campaign reinforced the emotional connection between Ichiro, the Mariners and fans worldwide. A key focus of our content strategy is to put fans and their passion at the center of everything we do, and Dear Ichiro showed how doing so can drive meaningful engagement, strengthen brand loyalty and deepen connections with both local & global audiences. By giving fans the chance to participate, the campaign created a living tribute that captured the impact of Ichiro’s influence.
